Weekend Encounters of the Strange.

Started my weekend in discussion with a female acquaintance... possible she should be listed as friend, however only when she is on good side of her bi-polarness. We sat in the humidity discussing the order of geek, dork, and nerd. It was my thought that geek is the least infected of these terms, followed by dork and finally nerd. My argument... Geek is really anyone with a technological savvy and interest in fantasy, sci-fi etc... possibly played an instrument in high school, but didn't it let consume them. Dork, someone with the same if not more tech savvy, but that is on the verge of obsession of fantasy, sci-fi and spilling into Comicon's, Trekkie conventions, etc. Nerd, is the epitome of all - Chess club in high school, consumed by band, probably player of the french horn, oboe, clarinet, or tuba... most definitely was involved in the D&D crowd. (BTW, learned from said female that games were called Modules.... thinking she fits the Nerd profile.) It was a lively discussion where we reminisced of our individual adolescence. Laughter definitely filled the air.

Had a family get together on Saturday in Miami (sounds wonderful right - tropical paradise.... not quite) Having lived in Miami for 3 years I grew to detest it... Living further North now, I can still only take it in small doses. Met a potential new extended family member.... a bloke we (my hubby and I) consider quite odd. Reminiscent of the childhood stories of a redheaded Paul Bunyan, dressed in Tommy Bahama clothing... with a very bushy red beard. He had discussions with most of the family that of which I found myself eavesdropping. He seems quite intelligent, however on the Geek, Dork, Nerd scale above, he definitely fits that of a Nerd. I held back laughter after learning that he is a modern day lumberjack (fulfilling my earlier thoughts on the Paul Bunyan clone)... trimming the palms, trees of South Florida, his particular specialty, using the hand saw to remove large branches, 5-8 inches in diameter. I wonder if he has an Ox. On our drive home, hubby told me he was on constant alert... thinking this man was the type who might be a disgruntled postal worker.

Sunday was complete blissfull laziness... I played video games, watched movies, cooked brownies, and finished my night watching True Blood. Where do I fit in the Geek, Dork, Nerd hierarchy.... I'll have to evaluate myself and get back to you.
